3 Simple Reasons All Home Pros Use Color and Patterns When Designing
Color is powerful and can have a major impact on you, your space and your mood. Interior designers and artists rely on color associations to create feelings of balance, harmony & cohesion. I'll be sharing my 3 reasons why you should use color and patterns in your own home.
Reason #1: They Bring Emotion, Enthusiasm & Energy to Your Place
Warm colors such as red pumps the adrenaline like no other color. That’s not to say that you shouldn’t use the color red in your home. Cool colors on the other hand, like blue, have the opposite effect. Let's use the color red as our prime example here. With it's connection to love & passion, red can increase one's heart rate, increase one's energy and certainly increase one's appetite. Brands like Coca Cola & Target use it in their ad campaigns for a reason! On the flip side of that, the color blue can be very calming, peaceful & relaxing and explains why it is a highly sought after color for bedrooms or bathrooms. Color is a personal choice, no doubt, but placement of color in your home should be a carefully thought out process.
Reason #2: They Add Points of Interest & Personality to Your Home
Like color, choosing the right patterns can also transform a space and mood. By adding harmony or visual interest to a space, you can intentionally create feelings of “this is home”, this is a place that I would like to unwind in after a long day. Just remember, the way colors affect emotions depends on the color's brightness, shade, tint or tone and whether it is cool or warm toned color.
Reason #3: They Blend Styles Seamlessly & Bring Balance to Your Space
When the interiors elicit peace and the colors/patterns just work together harmoniously, the home naturally feels at ease which is always our #1 goal when designing new spaces for our clients. If something is off to them, they feel it. As design professionals, it is our job to show them why. A great place to start is the color wheel because it explains the basics of mixing colors and their relationship to one another as it pertains to the wheel. It not only helps to blend styles & bring balance to the space, but it also aids in creating beautiful and harmonious color schemes AND who doesn’t want that, right?
To easily help my clients decide on what their "jumping off point", might be usually begins with a consultation or filling out a questionnaire about the favorite colors, their favorite time period or their favorite places to shop. If they are unsure, and most are, we usually can get a really good idea of the colors they love by peeking into their closets or learning about their favorite piece or art or area rug.
