Why Well-Worn Furniture with Good Bones is Always Worth Reviving

In my home staging journey over the years, I've come across many situations where most people want to preserve their heirloom furniture for many reasons.  Their most important reasons are for its sentimental value, strong family history or my personal favorite, lots of childhood memories.  Here are my top 3 alternatives to buying new.

Option #1: Refresh Beloved Furnishings through Reupholstery

This is a FUN process but requires some patience.  Why be patient, you ask?  Well, it does take some time to narrow down your choices of fabric, the colors of the fabric as well as selecting something that might have some texture to it.  Honestly, the options are endless but the end goal is to have it coordinate well with he rest of your home decor.  Once you have narrowed down your selections, it will amaze you how this can transform an outdated piece of furniture into something that feels fresh & modern.

Option #2: Stretch the Life of Furniture with Custom Slipcovers

If cushions need refreshing to remove the sag, here are a few things to consider.  1) the fabric on the cushions may be stretched out and this can certainly contribute to sagging.  2) the age of the cushion might be old and this, too, can contribute to the sag.  However, a new cover may be just what you are needing as this may improve the appearance of the cushion.  3) the foam inside the cushion has lost its resiliency & placing a cover on it will not solve the problem unfortunately.  A new foam replacement is needed at this point.

Option #3: Use the Best Features of a Piece and Upcycle Them

Fun ways to upcycle old pieces into something entirely new is to use what you love in your home.  For example, consider using your favorite fabric from your mom's curtains or fabric from your old-but-loved loveseat to make pillows for your sofa that you are not ready to move on from just yet.  As long as the fabric is in good condition and works well with the other elements in the room, this is a great way to help reduce waste and promote human well-being.

Simply by reviving older pieces of furniture, you are helping in the preservation of history and craftsmanship.  Items that may be discarded as junk allows others to reuse and repurpose them back to life.   How cool is that?   I'm sure you all heard the phrase, "one man's junk, is another man's treasure".  By reviving them back to life, you are helping to reduce waste, promote sustainability and preserve history.  Its a commendable choice that benefits both the environment and your home decor.
